CANADA has announced that it has lifted the export restrictions it had applied since 2020 to defence companies wishing to sell to Türkiye.
In a statement published on the government's website, recalling that a policy of denying applications for the export of certain defence-related items to Türkiye had been introduced on 16 April 2020, it was stated that “as of the date of this notice, the presumption of denial policy is no longer in effect.”
IN PLACE FOR 3 YEARS
It was noted that applications by exporters for export and brokering permits to Türkiye, including for items on the munitions list, will now be reviewed on a case-by-case basis under Canada's risk assessment framework. The Canadian government had imposed an arms embargo on Türkiye because of its support for Azerbaijan in the 44-day Second Karabakh War, launched on 27 September 2020 over the Azerbaijani territories occupied by Armenia. Claiming that Canadian technology had been used in Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles deployed against Armenian positions, it had also imposed an embargo on defence exports to Türkiye in October 2020.
